INTEGRITY, the quality of being honest and having strong moral principles, incorruptible.

The Queensland government’s integrity has been put to question. The most inane response to this charge was delivered by Deputy Premier Steven Miles when he asked “why question the vibe?”

From my perspective that utterance was a display of arrogance, contempt and lack of accountability.

I have watched local government councillors and officers stood down, sacked or reputations besmirched for the mere perception of corruption due to a strengthened Local

Government Act passed by this state government.

It appears this government is not prepared to undergo the same scrutiny when according to publicly available information there is more than perception involved here.

When the Premier offers an independent inquiry headed by a former Labor member and donor to the party, I must question the validity of any such process and her often-uttered claim to openness.

When challenged on this by a reporter, the Premier expressed her confidence in impartiality.

Perception Premier, perception. To reflect her own words: “This is not a good look.”

Why all the manoeuvring? What is she trying to hide?

Just for the record, I would apply the same principles to any party. I expect integrity from both government and opposition.

Integrity goes hand-in-hand with trust. If we cannot trust our elected government, they should not be there.

The opposition, high-ranking public servants and many constituents, including myself, demand a Royal Commission into the allegations. There is trust in the process and the power this body can bring to bear.

Failing to agree casts a dark shadow over the integrity of this government by default because no other means of investigation are acceptable.

WHAT is so completely unnecessary is Vladimir Putin.

I grew up reading the great Russian writers, love their musical composers, and even recall watching Sputnik cross the sky in the early ’60s.
