- ELISE WILLIAMS

A 45-FOOT yacht has been destroyed in a blazing inferno off the coast of Moreton Island.

The boat (pictured) caught fire about 7am Friday when two people aboard the vessel were forced to evacuate. According to police, the yacht was about 10 nautical miles off the coast of the southern end of Moreton Island.

Water police responded to the inferno where they recovered two people from the fully engulfed boat, transporting them to the Port of Brisbane.

The 57-year-old woman and 62year-old man, both from the Sunshine Coast, were not injured, however, did suffer smoke inhalation.

Paramedics from the Queensland Ambulance Service took the pair, who were both in a stable condition, to the Mater Hospital.

Firefighters and volunteers from the Marine Rescue also responded to the blaze.

It is understood crews monitored the yacht fire until the boat sank.
