SCHOOLS CHASE UNDER-15 RUGBY CUP GLORY

Merrimac edges closer to Cup victory.

MERRIMAC High School have one hand on the Gold Coast Super Schools Rugby Cup at the end of the second week of games, defying the floods and heated competition to be in prime position to lift the trophy.

With the deluge limiting some sides to just four games thus far for the tournament, challenges were frequent throughout the opening two weeks for the under-15 sides pushing for glory.

The first two rounds were called off due to flooding and Xavier College, based in Ballina, had to withdraw from week three due to the ongoing impacts of the floods.

The school has been an evacuation centre and a place of refuge for hundreds of families who have lost everything they have.

A tight 12-5 loss to Lindisfarne Anglican, currently in second place, threatened to put a dint in Merrimac’s title hopes on Wednesday. However a win over Varsity College has cemented them in atop of the competition heading into next Wednesday’s final round of clashes.

Somerset College is expected to miss the upcoming matches and will be forced to foreit, giving up points to their rivals.
