‘Healthy’ beer

-

While not exactly a superfood, it’s true that some beers are better for you. Instead of reaching for whatever’s in the Esky, try one of these not-terrible-for-you brews, which are either lower in alcohol, carbs or calories, or have other health benefits.

XXXX Summer Bright Lager

This is one of the lowest carb and calorie beers on the market, with the advantage of being drinkable, too. The fresh summertime lager is crisp, light and dry with a sweet fruity aroma, something not often seen in the sub-100 calorie range. 2.7g carbs and 94 calories per 330ml bottle.

Little Creatures Rogers’ Beer

The lower the alcohol, the better the beer is for you. And mid-strength brews are making a comeback. One of the best is Rogers’ Beer (3.8% ABV), an amber ale known for its honeycomb colour and aromas of passionfruit and roasted toffee. 11g carbs and 122g calories per 330ml bottle.

Mountain Goat Beer, Organic Steam Ale

If you’re into organic, you can now find beers made from fertiliser, pesticide and herbicide-free barley, wheat and hops. The original and the best is Mountain Goat Steam Ale, however, you can also find certified organic offerings from Redoak, Barossa Valley Brewing and Pure Blonde.

Holsten Zero

When it comes to health, it’s hard to beat the non-alcoholic beers. Imported German pilsner Holsten Alcohol Free may not be the newest, but it has the lowest carb and calorie count, making it a healthier alternative to sugary sober staples. 8.9g carbs and 40 calories per 330ml bottle.
