Daniher to feel Bombers ‘blowtorch’

-

THE “blowtorch” may be on Essendon after their ordinary opening round effort against Geelong but Brisbane Lions coach Chris Fagan doesn’t expect Bomber fans to miss Joe Daniher either when the teams clash on Saturday night.

Daniher has played against his former team since crossing to the Lions at the end of 2020, but only at the Gabba last year when closed borders prevented Bomber fans venturing north.

Amid questions over the two-year contract extension Daniher signed with the Lions during the pre-season and a report the AFL was seeking “extra information” about the nature of the deal, Fagan expected the star forward to feel

some heat at Marvel Stadium.

“The Danihers are muchloved Essendon people, the whole family,” Fagan said on Friday.

“My guess would be there would be a bit of a mixture, there‘ll be a few angry ones and a few that still love him. Joe will be ready for whatever is coming to him and hopefully he can play as well this week as he did last week.”

Fagan said five-time Lions best and fairest Dayne Zorko was “well position to play” the Bombers after suffering a calf issue in last Saturday night‘s win over Port Adelaide.

Zorko completed most of the training at the main session on Thursday after hearing “a pop” during last week’s game but Fagan said he may have to deal with lingering effects of an Achilles issue.

“He‘s well positioned to play at this point in time. Structurally his ankle is fine,” Fagan said.

“The soreness is around a bit of scar tissue where the operation took place. That’s prob going to hang around for awhile.“
