SOUTHPORT’S SIX-GAME BAPTISM OF FIRE

-

SOUTHPORT coach Steve Daniel says a 3-3 record to open the club’s second VFL season would be a welcome passing ng grade as the Sharks s prepare to face premiers Richmond d at Punt Rd on Sunday.

Southport will tackle 2019 grand finalists Richmond and Williamstown in back-tock-toback weeks, followed by Werribee, Geelong, Footscray and Casey over the opening seven rounds.

The Sharks dropped just one game in their VFL debut campaign, going 9-1, although exactly where they rate in the 21team competition is tough to judge after Covid heavily impacted the 2021 season. “Our only real learnings (last year) was playing Carlton, Ca Essendon, (Footscray) and North Melbourne. Other than that we had Brisbane two or three times, tim Gold Coast twice, twic Sydney and Aspley,” Aspley Daniel said. “It’s a little bit of the unknown again, similar to last year. What makes it exciting this year is 18 rounds against 18 different teams … that’s exactly what we want.”

First bounce at Punt Rd on Sunday is 10.35am AEST.
