Fashion designer, Sydney

- Fashion editor ANNABEL FALCO

If there is anyone who can make track pants and a cap look chic, it’s Alex Perry. Ladies and gentleman, , I present to you the fabulous wardrobe of Mr Perry, where Tom Ford suits and Valentino trainers collide with denim and cowboy boots. With a cutthroat attitude towards a closet clear out, Alex’s wardrobe and everyday style is refined, polished and luxe, where statement shades are always the final (and red-carpet slaying) flourish.

How would you describe your personal style?

For the past two years I’ve basically worn track pants, a T-shirt, a cap and runners, literally everyday, and before that it wasn’t too different to be honest. I will always wear jeans, boots, and a T-shirt.

Who are your style icons?

Tom Ford, of all people. He is incredibly stylish with an immaculate eye for detail.

What’s the oldest thing in your wardrobe?

Cowboy boots from Greece that are probably 25 years old.

What are your favourite brands?

Tom Ford for suits. I also own lots of shirts from different brands like Thom Browne, Givenchy, and Balenciaga. I’ve got a specific type of trainers from Valentino in five different colours including black, navy and camo, they are my go-to. I love the way G-star jeans fit me too. And Specsavers x Alex Perry collections of course.

What is the most sentimental item in your wardrobe?

I’m an Aquarius, I’m not very sentimental.

I don’t attach sentiment to clothing.

Have you ever made a style faux pas?

I made most of my style faux pas in the 1980s, when I first started to explore fashion. There might have been a leg warmer. I play it too safe now to make mistakes anymore.

What’s the most you have spent on an outfit?

$8000 on a Tom Ford tuxedo.

What is the most surprising thing about your wardrobe?

The size of it. It’s not big and very basic.

Top three wardrobe must haves?

A great suit that fits you really well. If you buy it off the rack, make sure you have it tailored so it fits perfectly. The second has to be a beautiful watch, you always notice a watch on a guy. Lastly, a really expensive e pair of shoes

W What would you buy if money was no object?

A completely diamond encrusted watch from Patek Philippe and a 15 carat Graff pinkie ring.

Summer or winter fashion? Both. I’m split down the middle.

Denim or dressed up? Denim.

Watch or sunglasses? Sunglasses.

Is there anything in your wardrobe you have regretted throwing out?

Never. When I’m over it, I’m over it.

How many pairs of glasses/sunglasses do you own?

I used to have about 80 pairs of sunglasses, but I culled them all down. Probably about 20 pairs now.

Favourite fashion era? Right now.
