CHANCE TO MARVEL AT COSPLAY
NICOLE Isaacs has been waiting with bated breath for her superhero moment.
More than two months, in fact, while leaning over a sewing machine.
The 37-year-old is one of thousands who will descend on the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre at the weekend for the 2022 Gold Coast Supanova.
The movie, comic-book and pop culture festival is a staple for those who love cosplay, where selfconfessed “superfans” painstakingly recreate costumes of their favourite characters.
Ms Isaacs is going as Okoye from Black Panther, and her outfit definitely packs a punch.
She says this will be her fourth time at the event, and it will be “the biggest and best yet”.
“Given our borders have just reopened I’m so excited to see everyone in costume from all over the country,” she said.
“I’ve got friends from Melbourne and Adelaide who are coming and I’ve worked really hard to get my outfit ready in time.”
Ms Isaacs said she became a Marvel fan in 2017, and her love for all things pop culture “snowballed”. “I’m studying fashion design so it was a no-brainer to start designing my own costumes for the event. It’s an amazing creative outlet,” she said.
“The Supanova crowd is so supportive of the cosplay community and I’ve made lifelong friends there.”
Shykodah Mcgrath is equally as excited to attend.
“I’ll be meeting the actress who voices the character I’m dressing up as, Caitlyn from Arcane, so I’m super excited,” the 22-year-old said.
“There’s nothing better than dressing up, going all out with your costume and catching up with friends.”
One of the biggest drawcards for the festival is The Book of Boba Fett’s Temuera Morrison, who also starred in Aquaman and Once Were Warriors.
Stars from Harry Potter, The
Amazing Spider-man, Star Trek, Vampire Diaries, Power Rangers, Pokemon and Lost will also attend.
The event will be held on April 910 at the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre, Broadbeach.
