Northern treat for foodies

- MELANIE WHITING

FREE spuds and $12 whole flame-grilled chickens will be served up as two new fast-food restaurants open in the booming northern Gold Coast.

Cult favourite Mr Potato will have its grand opening at Upper Coomera Village today.

Expect a spud frenzy with free potatoes up for grabs between noon and 3pm.

The eatery – already popular in South Australia – has put a modern spin on the traditional baked potato and also offers gluten-free, vegan, vegetarian and low sugar options.

Mr Potato already has a store in Palm Beach – with others coming soon to Burleigh Heads and Broadbeach.

If you’re after a bit more protein in your diet – iconic fast-food joint Oporto has opened a new store at Home Focus Pimpama in response to what the company described as “rising customer demand for delicious flame-grilled Portuguese chicken.”
