Shark to face friends and the old guard

- TOM BOSWELL

SOUTHPORT defender Max Spencer says he is excited to face some of his closest friends when he takes on his old club, Werribee, in Melbourne.

The Sharks will look to secure back-to-back wins by beating Werribee in round 3 of the VFL on Saturday.

Spencer spent three seasons at the Melbourne club before returning home to the Gold Coast to play for Southport in 2022 between stints with Palm Beach Currumbin in the QAFL throughout the Covid period.

“It’s really exciting to be playing against my old side, Werribee, this weekend,” Spencer said.

“Having spent the last three years there – albeit with some interruptions, I’ve made some lifelong friends, some of whom I will be lining up against on Saturday night.

“I am expecting it to be a highly competitive contest which should be plenty of fun.

“Coming back to the Gold Coast and playing at Southport has already been a really fulfilling experience.

“With the playing squad we have, it’s been really challenging to break into the team, but I feel like I have embraced that challenge, and playing alongside guys like Jesse Joyce, who I grew up with, has made the experience thoroughly enjoyable.”

The Sharks lost in round 1 against Richmond before bouncing back to defeat Williamstown last week in the club’s first home game of the season.

In the QAFLW, Southport will play Maroochydore on the Sunshine Coast, while Bond University will play host to Coorparoo in round 3 of the competition.
