HAWKS STILL LOOKING FOR WIN

- BRAYDEN HESLEHURST

REDCITY have overcome a secondhalf fightback from the North Gold Coast Seahawks to remain undefeated in Pool A of the Basketball Queensland Under-16 Division 1 State Championships.

The Roar and Seahawks came into the clash at Coomera after very different starts to the tournament with Redcity recording two convincing victories on day one while North Gold Coast were looking for their first win after stepping up from Division 2 for the state championships.

But the first half was all Redcity as the team, who made it all the way to the grand finals of the SQJBC competition, seemed a class above, leading by as much as 20 points early in the game.

But the Seahawks continued to fight and even reduced the deficit to single digits in the second half but the Roar were able to hold strong to make it three wins from three games at the Coomera Indoor Sports Centre while the Seahawks were still searching for their first win.

Meanwhile, five players scored in double figures to lead the South West

Metro Pirates Purple past the Mackay Comets 79-47.

Jack Mcgrath led the way for the Pirates with 18 points as the Pirates dominated the match after the first quarter to record a 32-point victory.

Damon Casey also had 14 for South West while Kobe Utai had 12, Obama Tawor scored 11 and Brendan Cheng had 10. Matthew Romal was impressive for Mackay with 17 points.

The Northside Wizards fought off a late game challenge from the South West Metro Pirates Red to record a four-point victory to start their second day of the tournament.

Antonio Rees was in red hot form for the Wizards, scoring 23 points to lead his team to the win while Zak Perro also had 14 for Northside.

Leo Bryant was the leading scorer for the Pirates with 19 points.

The Brisbane Capitals produced a dominant second half to run away with a 43-point victory over the Logan Thunder and keep their undefeated start to the tournament alive.

Surprisingly, the match was evenly poised at halftime with the Thunder giving the Capitals their best shot as Brisbane only held a slender threepoint advantage at the main break.

But several costly turnovers from the Thunder along with a shooting clinic from Capitals guard Charles Hinson allowed Brisbane to jump out to a double-digit lead to start the third quarter.

Logan were unable to match the Capitals intensity in the second half despite the efforts of Ash Mcgrath (21 points) and Joseph Baker (20 points).
