STAY SAFE ON ROADS, WATER OVER WEEKEND

- MELANIE WHITING

POLICE will be out in force across the Easter long weekend targeting roads and waterways.

More resources will be poured across city roads where police will be targeting speed and drug and drink drivers.

Volunteer surf lifesavers are also bracing for a busy weekend on the beaches after several rescues throughout the week.

Acting Chief Superintendent Rhys Wildman said six people lost their lives on Queensland roads last Easter weekend, and while none were on the Gold Coast, the city recorded multiple serious crashes.

He urged people to be safe on the roads and waterways, and to plan ahead.

“Don’t put yourself in a position where either you put yourself, or your family and other road users at risk,” Supt Wildman said.

“The last thing we want to see on our roads this weekend is a loss of life, or somebody seriously injured, or involved in a life changing event.

“Stay safe, it’s going to be a great Easter. The weather is looking good. Come down to the Gold Coast but make sure you do it safely.”

Surf Life Saving Queensland Gold Coast regional operations manager Nathan Fife urged beachgoers to swim between the flags during patrolled times only.

“Please listen to our lifesavers and lifeguards and do the right thing and be safe,” he said.

Mr Fife said last Sunday’s drowning tragedy, when 23year-old Nicholas Hunter died, was a sad reminder of the dangers of mixing alcohol and swimming.

“Everyone likes to celebrate the long weekend. If you have been drinking, please stay well away from the beaches or any waterways.”
