Elliot Garnaut

Creative director, 30

- ANNABEL FALCO

When it comes to style and sass, no one does it quite like celebrity stylist Elliot Garnaut where elevated activewear and a 2009 Ksubi T-shirt are regularly styled up with Gucci blazers and his Banbe collaboration shades. With his “if I like it, I’ll buy it” attitude, you can expect Vetements by day and Saint Laurent by night with unexpected pops of H&M and Uniqlo to keep his looks aspirational but achievable. A tour of Garnaut’s wardrobe is as funny as it is fabulous.

How would you describe your personal style?

My personal style is ever-changing, I really don’t have a definitive dress sense. Sometimes I’m super trend focused, other times totally timeless. I dress for my surroundings or what I’m doing, ie: I spent a lot of time in “elevated activewear”, which is my favourite pair of technical shorts but balanced with a great jacket and Jordan lows. Yet, by night I could be in a Saint Laurent tuxedo. I guess I have always had a preppy undertone to my wardrobe. I was full prep circa high school (my first job was on the floor at Ralph Lauren) so I’d say the backbone of my dressing touches on this.

Who are your style icons?

With the exclusion of my mother, I don’t have any style icons. I am inspired by people I meet and places I travel to.

What are your favourite brands?

I’m wearing a lot of Balenciaga, Vetements, Saint Laurent, Celine and Gucci. I’m also a total sucker for Brandy Melville, Uniqlo and H&M. No fuss, if I like it, I’ll buy it.

What’s the oldest thing in your wardrobe?

I have a Ksubi T-shirt I bought to wear to do a DJ set at Schoolies in Byron Bay 2009.

Have you ever made a style faux pas?

My god are you joking? Every year I look back on the same date the year before and think “shit mate, why”. I get so bored so easily so my hair colour or cut alone changes multiple times a year. Fashion isn’t meant to be taken seriously, play around.

What is the most surprising thing in (or about) your wardrobe?

I think people might think that it’s only designer brands and super OTT. I think the most fundamentally shocking thing about my wardrobe is what I default to. If I’m in Melbourne or Sydney and it’s a day commitment, I’m generally in my variation of activewear.

Top three wardrobe must haves?

Anything from the Wardrobe NYC staple collection. Blazer, pant, coat.

What is the most sentimental item in your wardrobe?

My signet ring. It was my mum’s. She’s not dead, I just stole it and never gave it back. It means the world to me, and I know she loves that I wear it.

What would you buy if money was no object?

A holiday for my favourite people.

Summer or winter fashion?

Winter, it’s more complex and interesting. Outfits are so much more dynamic in winter.

Denim or suiting?

You rarely wear a suit to breakfast, and you certainly don’t wear denim to a board meeting. Both are essential.
