Cameron Baird Trophy to be awarded once again in Titans ANZAC Round clash

- NICK WRIGHT

IN ONE of the highest scoring affairs of the 2021 NRL season, Titans star AJ Brimson did all he could to withstand a South Sydney Rabbitohs’ ANZAC Round onslaught.

While he was unable to muster a triumph in the 40-30 defeat, his trademark electric running game was enough to earn him the Gold Coast club’s inaugural Cameron Baird Trophy.

Brimson’s 191 running metres, six tackle busts and pair of linebreaks were enough to have him recognised as the man who “demonstrated values similar” to that of the award’s namesake.

Even with million dollar man David Fifita scoring a hat-trick.

Cameron Baird, whose family are Titans members, was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross for his 2013 heroics in the line of fire. Prior to his death, he was awarded the Meal of Gallantry. At 32, he tragically passed away during a 2nd Commando Regiment raid on a Taliban stronghold in Afghanistan.

In the build up to the Titans’ Saturday night clash with the North Queensland Cowboys, Baird’s father Doug visited the club and spoke to the playing group to share his son’s story and reinforce the meaning of ANZAC Day.

The award values selflessness and courage and a willingness to make the extra effort on behalf of the team, and will have its second winner by the end of the contest in Townsville.
