Dogged resolve to help moose

- Anne Jane

THERE are incredibly beautiful souls out there who are deliberate in creating a better planet.

They remember that the real world is wide and they help us all to understand our privilege within it.

On a mission to circumnavigate the world from South Africa, Ana Hill and Brent Grimbeek invited us aboard their catamaran, Impi, while on anchor at Southport. This is their story:

“We just love the Gold Coast. We have so many friends here and we always feel so welcome. “We’ve tried to continue our journey several times. However, Covid has taught us that life sometimes has other plans.

“Border control has been kind and the sailing community is just awesome. Life off the grid has brought so many wonderful experiences and stories.

“One we are really passionate about is an animal program we started in New Caledonia.

“We fell in love with Moose, an abandoned dog on Casey Island.

“He became popular with sailors and our Youtube family loved him so much.

“They rallied behind our Gofundme campaign to provide him with ongoing medical care from a flying vet in Noumea until he sadly passed away.

“Our love and compassion for him inspired us to help other dogs and cats on the outer islands of New Caledonia and with the help of sponsors, volunteers, sailing friends and a team of flying vets

we managed to instigate an animal welfare program that remains ongoing.

“You really just don’t know what lies at the next port of our lives and the impact our actions have. I have written a book about Moose. He truly deserves this legacy.

“Our plans? Well we will shortly leave Australia again. However, we’ll be back. The Gold Coast is just sensational and The Boatworks is hands down the best boatyard and marina in the world.”
