Jessica Mauboy

32, singer and The Voice coach

- Fashion editor ANNABEL FALCO

Jessica Mauboy’s closet is a fashion fantasy come true where Gucci suits, feathered headdresses, double denim and Romance Was Born sequin dresses combine to create street style (and onstage) magic. A self-described “craver of shoes”, Mauboy’s collection is as varied as it is envied – everything from Converse sneakers to patent Prada heels wait for their moment. Referencing Rhianna and Lady Gaga as style muses, it’s clear we are in for some fabulous The Voice frocks.

How would you describe your personal style?

I am a craver for fashion and anything shoes. I love an oversized blazer. There is a bit of minimalist to how I dress. I plan it this way: I need an image of it, then I will start applying what will go with that, what shoe would go with that, what denim look would go with that. I tend to slowly apply/ build things to the look.

Who are your style icons?

J.LO is my go-to but Rhianna is a really cool fashionista too. I think she doesn’t take it too seriously. I also love Lady Gaga’s look.

What’s the oldest thing in your wardrobe?

I have a pair of mustard Prada heels. I would have bought them around 2013, they are patent and still in amazing condition, beautiful, and I have not worn them once.

What are your favourite brands?

I love Gucci – I just love that look and I really like a lot of their oversized items. I love Michael Lo Sordo, Christopher Esber, Toni Maticevski as well. Our Australian designers are killing it right now. And Romance was Born. I love, love a good sequin.

Have you ever made a style faux pas?

Back in the day when I was with a girl band, I wore leggings that had ruching on them … I didn’t quite understand TV and how it translated to screen and the ruching looked like I had meat rope wrapped around my legs. That’s the one thing I would never wear again.

What is the most surprising thing in your wardrobe?

Probably one of the Brazilian dance outfits. I remember buying it one year for Mardi Gras. It’s a really, really fun outfit – it has tassels and beading, and there is a massive feathered headdress that is poking out of my closet.

Top three wardrobe must-haves?

My flats, these are Stuart Weitzman, they’re my little fluffies and I literally wear them with everything. A plain black oversize blazer … it just goes with everything – you could wear a dress, jeans, boots, you can style it up or dress it down. And a pair of Converse runners.

Most sentimental item in your wardrobe?

In my 2017/18 tour I had a “reveal moment”, a massive tulle skirt that revealed the dress underneath. It’s sentimental as it’s something that (designer) Angie White and I spent time working on and applying all the individual Swarovski gems on it.

What would you buy if money was no object?

A Louis Vuitton suitcase trunk.

The Voice airs on Sundays at 7pm on Channel 7
