HONOUR FOR CELTICS STALWART

Steve to receive posthumous life membership

- CALLUM DICK

CELTICS Basketball Club stalwart Steve Jacobson will be posthumously awarded Gold Coast Basketball Life Membership in honour of his lifetime of service to the game.

Gold Coast Basketball chairman Joel Mcinnes said the committee met a few weeks ago and voted to award life membership to Steve, though unfortunately he passed away before official recognition was possible.

“I heard about two months ago that he was unwell. We had a meeting about handing Steve life membership but unfortunately we didn’t get the chance to do it in person because he was in hospital,” Mcinnes said.

Steve was part of the fabric of Gold

Coast Basketball for more than two decades.

He was a committee member at Celtics from the late-90s through to 2013 and was awarded life membership of Celtics for his endless hours of volunteer and support work which included training, coaching, committee work, fundraising and more.

Considered one of the strongest junior basketball programs on the Gold Coast, Celtics’ success came in no small part due to Steve’s tireless work at every level.

“Steve is one of those classic guys – well-loved, cheeky, always there to help out. A classic, great clubman,” Mcinnes said.

“He had been involved with the Celtics juniors for a very long time. He coached hundreds of kids and touched a lot of lives.

“We have a committee meeting each year and put a few peoples’ names up for consideration for life membership. For that you have to have spent a generation in the game, 20 years of service.

“Not just someone who plays but someone who has given back to the game. And Steve is someone who gave back.

“He was an extremely well-liked person so for us it was a no-brainer.”

GC Basketball shared a message on Facebook from Steve’s son Corey, inviting friends and family to celebrate his life next Tuesday at Allambe Memorial Gardens from 11am.

“It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Stephen ‘Steve’ Jacobsen. Steve passed away surrounded by family and friends after a short but defiant battle,” Corey wrote.

“We as a family have been over

whelmed by the support and messages from everyone. We take great comfort in knowing Steve left a lasting legacy on so many.”
