Owen Wright, Australia’s surfing bronze medallist in Tokyo, was left in career limbo after finishing one place below the cut in 2022, the year many believed would be his final stab at a world title.

Fellow Australian Olympian Sally Fitzgibbons finished 15th and was dropped from the tour for the first time in 14 years, ending a 108-consecutive-event streak. Amid an uproar of dissent among surf fans, she was handed a wildcard to compete at the next event at G-land, beginning on Saturday.
