WITH THE ELECTION NOW DONE, LET’S HAVE SOME RESPECT

- BOB JANSSEN Bob Janssen is a longtime passionate Gold Coaster

IT is what it is.

We must accept that the Liberal’s lost the election and accept that Labor won, although on the lowest primary vote ever.

Those figures should send a reality check message to both major parties and the winner should be wary of claiming a “mandate”.

New Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has promised to end the division, to bring the nation together, and conduct a more respectful government. Already there are those in his own party that disagree with disparaging personal attacks on new Liberal leader Peter Dutton already making headlines.

Newly sworn in Federal Treasurer Jim Chalmers began by spouting the inherited Liberal debt and the challenges that will bring. Perhaps he forgot that during the pandemic he wanted to spend over $7bn more and that Labor’s election promises added another $76bn plus off-budget expenditure to the existing debt.

So far, not much to indicate a fresh start and lift confidence.

Meanwhile the Liberal Opposition must decide where to position itself.

The moderates took a pounding trying to out- left Labor.

Lesson learned? I wonder with so many of them wanting to continue down that decimating path.

In today’s troubled world we need a strong hand in opposition, a centre right approach. Relying on something that has not been invented yet to address climate change does not pass the pub test.

Nuclear power does. But that would take balls, and someone prepared to fight back against indoctrination, woke and wet philosophies.

We should be continually reminded that the rest of the world wants to buy our coal and the proceeds of that pays off our debt, pays for the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) and a hell of a lot of our social services.

After La Nina where the sun did not shine much but we had record crops,

El Nino will return and so will the droughts.

We need to build dams. To flood proof our land and build reserves of water for us and agriculture. The Nationals held all their seats.

But they represent the people who grow our crops and herds while we in the city expect those basic food items to magically appear on our supermarket shelves.

A good government is carved from a good opposition and Dutton’s record makes him the right man for the job and the time so how about some of that promised respect from your troops Prime Minister? Thoughts? Email letters@goldcoast.com.au
