Deyen digs in to take early lead in the WA Open

- TOM BOSWELL

GOLD Coast golfer Deyen Lawson has fired an eightunder par bogey-free round to put himself in the lead early in the Western Australia Open in Perth.

At one stage Lawson thought he could shoot under 60 in Round 1 at The Western Australian Golf Club on Thursday before he finished the day with 62.

Lawson was yet to start Round 2 when the Bulletin went to print on Friday.

“I thought about (going under 60) for about half a second,” Lawson said.

“After I hit that tee shot to 15 feet I thought, I can hole that to go eight-under with six holes to go. That’s three more birdies. And then I walked off the tee and into the trees and forgot about everything I was thinking about.

“I’ve been in that position before and it’s not good to think about it.”

Lawson missed the cut at the WA Open in 2016 but after spending four months in Europe on the Challenge Tour he believes his form is as good as it has ever been.

“The game and swing feels as though it is trending in probably the best direction that it ever has,” Lawson said.

“The stuff that I have been doing off the course in terms of preparing and practising, trying to get my body in better condition. I feel better so if I’m feeling better physically then mentally as well it’s helping.

“I know when my game’s on it can compete anywhere. It’s when it’s not that it needs to be a bit better.”

Lawson reached the end of the first nine six-under par before he just missed out on birdies at 10 and 11.

He managed an impressive birdie straight after on hole 12 and nearly chipped in from off the green on 17 as he finished with 62.

Adam Brady finished his second round at nine-under.
