Craig Zonca
ABC Radio Brisbane Breakfast co-host, 38, Coorparoo
What time do you wake up on a Saturday?
The 3am alarm is turned off on a Saturday but our little girl Molly, two in March, is an early riser so my wife Jessica Hinchliffe and I are usually up by 5.30am.
Where and when do you exercise?
It’s mostly confined to chasing Molly around the house and in our local park. We go on a family stroll around Coorparoo every afternoon and I try to squeeze in a workout when I can. On a weekend, we venture further afield – along the esplanade at Wynnum, around Kangaroo Point, through Toohey Forest or hiking up Mt Coot-tha.
What’s your go-to weekend breakfast?
I love a good cook-up with hash browns, home-cooked beans and some smashed avo. Otherwise, you’ll probably find us working through the menu at Little Genovese, Coorparoo or Florence, Camp Hill.
Favourite park/green space?
We’re making our way through most of the parks on the southside. Majestic Park, also known as the Dragon Park, in Coorparoo, is my current go-to.
Local coffee haunt?
Little Genovese, or Black Sheep, Woolloongabba.
Favourite takeaway?
We love to cook – Jess is an unreal baker and jam maker – but come Friday night, I’m usually driving to Hatori Karaage, Camp Hill, to pick up a katsu curry.
Best spot for date night?
Date night, what’s that? Working in breakfast radio, it’s a cause for celebration if I’m still upright at 8.30pm so we prefer a fancy lunch if Molly’s grandparents are in town to babysit.
Favourite live music/theatre venue?
I have so many happy memories from seeing gigs at the Tiv’ (Tivoli) – from watching the Kooks to seeing Sharon Jones and the DapKings a few years ago. I’m a huge fan of the Fortitude Music Hall – it’s incredible for live music. And I had a bit of a pinch-me moment last year on stage with the Qld Symphony Orchestra at QPAC’S Concert Hall.
Favourite sporting venue?
You can’t go past Suncorp Stadium. The atmosphere of a State of Origin decider is truly something special – the noise, the colour, the beer being spilled down your back as the bloke behind you jumps in celebration … it’s all part of it.
Favourite beach in Queensland?
We had a family beach house at Lammermoor Beach, Capricorn Coast, when I was growing up so my mind immediately goes back to those carefree times.
Favourite place to holiday or hidden treasure in Queensland?
When time permits, we love getting away to Agnes Water for a few days by the beach. Closer to home, we venture to the Scenic Rim.
What’s your perfect Saturday?
A little sleep-in, a good strong coffee (or two) to start. Off to a park with Molly before a lazy lunch and an afternoon nap to recharge, then catching up with friends.
