Why would we trust PM on Voice bureaucracy?

- Bob Janssen

The respect I held for Joe Hildebrand imploded with his latest piece of emotional trash where he invoked the teachings of “Jesus” and a twisted version of the facts in his bid to sell the “Yes” vote on “The Voice” referendum. I never thought he would sink so low.

It seems Joe has turned to evangelism to get something out of us. Not money which is the usual fare but our vote on a question that requires a lot of explanation that so far has not been forthcoming.

Joe even answers his own question. “What would Jesus do?” “The first and obvious answer is that he would take the side of the most disadvantaged.” Amazing! Joe must have a private line to Jesus.

Reading on, Joe’s illusion of wisdom reflects in his narrative when he seems to take on, by proxy, the role of the first apostle Peter the rock. Can you believe it!

But Joe can sink even lower. And did. He goes on to patronize Warren Mundine and Jacinta Price then seeming to agree with their argument to resolve issues in Indigenous regional communities then twists it by saying we should put the police reports of rising crime aside and the logical best answer to this escalating crime spree is “The Voice”. Never mind these communities reject it because they, like many of us, do not understand it and wonder how they will be represented amongst the 280-odd clans in our nation.

Where was the intervention when requested time and again? Our Prime Minister interrupted his three days at the tennis, flew in and flew out within hours finishing with a partial booze ban. More was and is needed. But what is his answer? Why the “The Voice” course. He failed when on the spot, so why should we trust him with an added bureaucracy we will have to deal with. And yes, we will because if it effects the Indigenous, it affects us all.

Joes closing comments suggest “The Voice” is simply an advisory body subject to change via parliamentary process and we should trust them. Well trust is a rare commodity in today’s political world. How many times has the current government screwed up or just screwed us?

Got your $275.00 electrical saving yet or has it gone up? What about the $1500.00 tax saving that disappeared for 10 million of us? How’s our expansion on becoming self-sufficient in manufacturing going when the danger of power failures increases due to reliance on renewables? And what about our treasurer telling us things will get

worse before they get better. That’s not an answer to our dilemma, it’s a requiem. Trust this government Joe? You can’t be serious.

Now Joe, is not a constitutional lawyer and neither am I, so to imply through his story there is nothing to be worried about in enshrining “The Voice” in the constitution is a layman’s opinion as is mine. But eminent constitutional experts have warned there could be challenges should “The Voice” be ignored. That would leave it up to the High Court to interpret, a body not elected by us, the people, and a body that parliament and we are subject to. Joe’s or even the PM’S guarantees of safety hold no value whatsoever.

We should not ignore or brush over important facts in this decisionmaking process. Under the constitution we are all equal under the law with the same rights regardless of race, colour, or creed. Healthcare, and education is provided for those who cannot afford it. We all have the right of freedom of speech and peaceful dissent. All the above is available to our Indigenous. If we failed them, the responsibility lies with various levels of government. There are plenty of voices the gov-ernment has failed to hear or effectively respond to. The PM’S interruption of three days at the tennis rather than more time in Alice Springs is a recent example. Joe implies only “The Voice” can fix it.

Why do we need another voice, especially when it divides us by race when now we are all Australians equal under our constitution.

“The Voice” elevates a race to special privileges the other 97 per cent of us cannot equal. We effectively become second-class citizens in our own country, divided because we are not Indigenous no matter where we originated from and what we have contributed to our nation. And we who challenge “The Voice” are told we are tearing this nation apart, spreading hatred, are heartless and racist. Two simple ques-tions are required here. Where is 90 percent of the hate coming from?

And if 97 percent of our nation is “disadvantaged” because of preferential treatment for a race, which side of the question is racist?

From where I see it, the rot has already set in and “The Voice”’ is the next step on a road to selfdestructing all we believe in.
