Subway offenders are ‘brain dead’

- Charlton Hart

Intruders used an angle grinder and pry bars to smash their way into a Gold Coast Subway store.

The business on Christensen Rd, Yatala, was targeted about 2am on Friday.

The shop manager said an angle grinder was used to cut a padlock on fencing and gain entry to the car park.

The thieves then used pry bars to lift the metal security screens and smash through the glass windows.

Once inside, the offenders were only there for about 60 seconds rummaging through cupboards.

In a statement made to the

Today Show, Subway area manager Mark Noe spoke of the disruption caused by the thieves to his employees and business.

“I’ve got staff today who are not going to have a shift – lord knows how long it will take us to actually get this back to a state where we can open and trade,” he said. “You guys that do this are honestly brain dead – get a job, get a life.”

A bystander managed to video the offenders as they were leaving the store.

In the footage, two men in balaclavas are seen getting into a white 2022 Kia Seltos with Queensland registration 474 ZXL. The vehicle was seen entering the M1 southbound.

The getaway vehicle was stolen from Carindale on April 9.

Offenders broke into a home about 2.40am, taking the keys to the Kia and a Mercedes.

The owner of the vehicles, who wishes to remain anonymous, told the Bulletin they were in bed asleep when the break-in occurred. They said they were “shocked” to learn that the Kia had been used in the smash and grab at the Yatala Subway store.

Police sources said the stolen vehicle had been sighted at Kelvin Grove, Red Hill and Ashgrove in recent days.

Its last known location was at Eight Mile Plains about 2.20am on Friday, according to sources.

A Queensland Police Service spokesman said officers were still working to determine if the same group who broke into the Subway store was linked to any other break and enters.

The damage bill to the Subway at Yatala was estimated to be at least $5000.

Anyone with further information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
