Flowers and fashion in fusion

Western Suburbs Weekly - - Style - With Belinda Cipriano

A FUSION of floral and fashion has come to life as part of an installation created by Perth floral artist Matthew Landers adorning the Claremont Quarter since November 26.

The spectacular 1.8m life-sized mannequins with about 2000 flowers feature a trailing gown made out of roses, leucospermum and orchids, and took about 40 hours to complete.

Landers said he had drawn inspiration for the installation following a trip to London last year and visit to a Balenciaga exhibition.

“I went to the Balenciaga exhibition at the Victo- ria and Albert Museum and was completely in awe of the forms, colours and details embedded into the history of this iconic brand,” he said.

“I thought ‘how can I apply the beautiful shape and weight of fabrics along with master craftsmanship and apply it with fresh flowers?’.

“Floristry is much like fashion, with changing trends and fast-paced creativity.

“Like Balenciaga, you only become iconic if you start to create things with your skill that others can’t do as well as you.”

Enlisting the help of fashion lovers real estate agent Emma Milner, fashion blogger Jenelle Witty, influencer Olivia Vlachou, stylist and designer Karolina Borkovic and socialite Melissa Graham, the four women put the finishing touches on the piece.

“I want to show how something living and beautiful can be transformed into fashion and who better to stand alongside it than Perth’s most fashionforward women,” Landers said.

“Flowers evoke such an emotion in all of us, I can only imagine how flowers and fashion all in one within Perth’s fashion capital Claremont Quarter will make these beautiful women feel.”

Landers said visitors to the Quarter could expect to see a piece that was visually stimulating and something they would want to look at all day.

“I wanted it to resemble everything summer,” he said.

“Pretty pastel pinks, bountiful blooms and stunning design.”

Landers will also hold a pop-up florist at Claremont Quarter from yesterday to December 16.
