Ser­vice jewel awarded

ROBERT Som­mer­field, or bet­ter known as Bob to many lo­cals, was re­cently awarded a medal for 50 years of ser­vice from the Freema­sons Queens­land.

The 93-year-old Right Wor­ship­ful Brother was ini­ti­ated into Charleville Lodge No 70 on March 15, 1968.

The 50-year ser­vice jewel is pre­sented by the United Grand Lodge of Queens­land to mem­bers in recog­ni­tion of 50 years of ser­vice.

The ser­vice jewel was pre­sented to Mr Som­mer­field on March 17 on be­half of the Grand Master, Most Wor­ship­ful Brother Alan Town­son. It was pre­sented to him by his nephew RW Bro Roger Turn­bull Past Ju­nior War­den.

“Bob pro­gressed through the var­i­ous of­fices, in­clud­ing sec­re­tary of the Lodge and was in­stalled as Master for the first time on Septem­ber 17, 1977 and again on Septem­ber 19, 1998 and Septem­ber 18, 1999. He is also a trustee of Charleville Lodge,” Mr Turn­bull said.

“He served the United Grand Lodge of Queens­land as an As­sis­tant Grand Su­per­in­ten­dent of Work­ings in 1987–1998 and was el­e­vated to the rank of Past Ju­nior War­den on June 7, 1995.”

Mr Som­mer­field was proud to re­ceive the jewel.

“I am a very hum­ble per­son and was very hum­bled and hon­oured to re­ceive this medal,” he said.

“It meant a great deal to me that I was re­warded for 50 years of ser­vice.”

Mr Som­mer­field’s fam­ily were also proud he was ac­knowl­edge for all his ef­fort over the 50 years.

“It was very ex­cit­ing and we were please and happy for him to re­ceive it,” Mr Som­mer­field’s daugh­ter Ali­son McMen­i­man said.

“When we were kids grow­ing up in the out­back I can re­mem­ber dad go­ing into town to the ma­sonic lodge and its a great achieve­ment for 50 years.”

The pre­sen­ta­tion was made in the Lodge Room with Lodge mem­bers of Charleville and Au­gathella, fam­ily and friends.
