Service jewel awarded
ROBERT Sommerfield, or better known as Bob to many locals, was recently awarded a medal for 50 years of service from the Freemasons Queensland.
The 93-year-old Right Worshipful Brother was initiated into Charleville Lodge No 70 on March 15, 1968.
The 50-year service jewel is presented by the United Grand Lodge of Queensland to members in recognition of 50 years of service.
The service jewel was presented to Mr Sommerfield on March 17 on behalf of the Grand Master, Most Worshipful Brother Alan Townson. It was presented to him by his nephew RW Bro Roger Turnbull Past Junior Warden.
“Bob progressed through the various offices, including secretary of the Lodge and was installed as Master for the first time on September 17, 1977 and again on September 19, 1998 and September 18, 1999. He is also a trustee of Charleville Lodge,” Mr Turnbull said.
“He served the United Grand Lodge of Queensland as an Assistant Grand Superintendent of Workings in 1987–1998 and was elevated to the rank of Past Junior Warden on June 7, 1995.”
Mr Sommerfield was proud to receive the jewel.
“I am a very humble person and was very humbled and honoured to receive this medal,” he said.
“It meant a great deal to me that I was rewarded for 50 years of service.”
Mr Sommerfield’s family were also proud he was acknowledge for all his effort over the 50 years.
“It was very exciting and we were please and happy for him to receive it,” Mr Sommerfield’s daughter Alison McMeniman said.
“When we were kids growing up in the outback I can remember dad going into town to the masonic lodge and its a great achievement for 50 years.”
The presentation was made in the Lodge Room with Lodge members of Charleville and Augathella, family and friends.
