FACES AT THE RACES
THE Augathella Easter Races proved popular on Monday, with guests travelling from across the southwest to catch a slice of the outback action.
Augathella race club president John Mckay said the event had run without a hitch and had attracted one of the biggest crowds in recent memories.
“We estimate that there was a turn out of between 500 to 600 people, which is one of the biggest crowds I’ve seen,” Mr Mckay said.
“With the races and the rodeo combined, I’d say the Easter weekend is one of the biggest events on the Augathella social calendar.
“Last year the races were held at the end of the school holidays and I think people would have been getting their kids ready to go back to school.
“This year, the races were held at the beginning of the school holidays and we had a much larger crowd.
“It was a good group of people and it was the best I’ve ever seen the track.
“We’ve recently finished renovations and upgrades on the facilities, there are two new shade cloths and we’ve had exclusion fencing donated to keep the kangaroos out and the punters in.”
Mr Mckay said guests travelled from as far as Sydney, Brisbane and Toowoomba for the race day, with a number of buses transporting guests in from Charleville.
He thanked the ground staff team for their effort in preparing the track for the event.
