Strumming away on some pins

Western Times - - SCHOOL HOLIDAY GUIDE -

MAKE this simple pin strummer.

You will need:

■ A base: items to tape bobby pins to: for example empty plastic bottle; polystyrene cube; tin; mobile phone case.

■ Bobby pins

■ Tape

To make:

Widen bobby pins and tape them onto the base.

To strum your strummer, gently push down on the pin’s end and allow to pop back up. The sounds it makes will depend on the type of material your base is made from, the width you stretch the pins and where you place the pins. Experiment with different bases.

What do wide stretched pins sound like compared to pins barely spread open? Do different sized bobby pins make different sounds? What kind of tone do you get when you place the pins on the centre of the base compared to the edge?
