WITH Queensland Road Safety Week on the horizon, here is a breakdown of some safety tips:
Monday, August 27 – pedestrians
■ Cross roads and railways at designated crossings whenever possible.
■ Stop, look, listen and think before crossing.
■ Wearing headphones and using a mobile phone will reduce your awareness of what is happening around you.
■ In 2017, 35 pedestrians died and 357 were injured.
Tuesday, August 28 – motorists
■ Share the road safely with other road users – follow the road rules, be patient and courteous.
■ Give other road users the extra space they need, especially heavy vehicles.
■ In 2017, 101 motorists died and 3528 were injured in car accidents on Queensland roads.
Wednesday, August 29 – heavy vehicles
■ Be aware of other road users – they don’t always know your blind spots.
■ Plan rest stops by downloading the RestSpace app.
■ If driving a long vehicle, more than one turning lane is legally permitted.
■ In 2017, six heavy vehicle drivers died and 135 were injured.
Thursday, August 20 – bicycles
■ Ride the right bike for your size and ability and always wear a helmet. If not confident at riding on a road, footpaths are permitted.
Friday, August 31 – motorcycles
■ The faster you go, the harder you hit.
■ Riding tired affects reaction times and impairs judgement.
