WITH Queens­land Road Safety Week on the horizon, here is a break­down of some safety tips:

Mon­day, Au­gust 27 – pedes­tri­ans

■ Cross roads and rail­ways at des­ig­nated cross­ings when­ever pos­si­ble.

■ Stop, look, lis­ten and think be­fore cross­ing.

■ Wear­ing head­phones and us­ing a mo­bile phone will re­duce your aware­ness of what is hap­pen­ing around you.

■ In 2017, 35 pedes­tri­ans died and 357 were in­jured.

Tues­day, Au­gust 28 – mo­torists

■ Share the road safely with other road users – fol­low the road rules, be pa­tient and cour­te­ous.

■ Give other road users the ex­tra space they need, espe­cially heavy ve­hi­cles.

■ In 2017, 101 mo­torists died and 3528 were in­jured in car ac­ci­dents on Queens­land roads.

Wed­nes­day, Au­gust 29 – heavy ve­hi­cles

■ Be aware of other road users – they don’t al­ways know your blind spots.

■ Plan rest stops by down­load­ing the RestS­pace app.

■ If driv­ing a long ve­hi­cle, more than one turn­ing lane is legally per­mit­ted.

■ In 2017, six heavy ve­hi­cle driv­ers died and 135 were in­jured.

Thurs­day, Au­gust 20 – bi­cy­cles

■ Ride the right bike for your size and abil­ity and al­ways wear a hel­met. If not con­fi­dent at rid­ing on a road, foot­paths are per­mit­ted.

Fri­day, Au­gust 31 – mo­tor­cy­cles

■ The faster you go, the harder you hit.

■ Rid­ing tired af­fects re­ac­tion times and im­pairs judge­ment.
