Raids in St George catch 12

Western Times - - NEWS -

A ONE-TIME low-level drug user charged in sweeping raids across St George a year ago had tried to take over as the town’s ice dealer, police will allege.

The man is one of 12 people arrested and charged with a combined 44 offences under Operation Papa Acclaim, which targeted the supply and possession of methamphetamine in St George.

Detective Acting Superintendent Paul Hart said investigations suggested the man had tried to assume the role after the closure of Operation Oscar Kohl 12 months ago.

Det Act Supt Hart said information from the community was crucial to shattering drug supply.

“Drugs present a real threat to our communities, not just within our homes but also even on the road with drug drivers,” he said.

“Once we realised new dealers were possibly emerging within the St George area after the closure of our last operation, we can certainly thank the community for providing information in relation to those activities, and we’ve certainly jumped on that information.”

Operation Oscar Kohl was a protracted campaign identifying the high-level dealers and suppliers in St George and surrounding towns.

The closure of Operation Papa Acclaim almost two weeks ago coincided with raids in Dalby, where 12 people were arrested with a combined 44 charges.

One man was charged with 102 counts of supplying dangerous drugs.

“Anyone contemplating being involved in drug activity might pay heed to the fact the next knock on the door could be from the police,” Det Act Supt Hart said.

“We know that drugs are simply a matter of supply and demand; and where there’s a quick buck to be made, people will always step up and fill the void.”
