Alfieri in line to lead Maserati onslaught
With the Maserati Levante set to go on sale here by the end of the year, thoughts turn to what the Italian carmaker is likely to do next.
The steer from inside the company is that the next model is likely to be either a production version of the Alfieri coupe concept ( below) shown at Geneva two years ago, or a replacement for the elderly Granturismo coupe.
Maserati’s ambition is reportedly to emulate Ferrari with five model lines and a five-year replacement cycle. By our reckoning these five lines would be Alfieri, Granturismo/grancabrio, Ghibli, Quattroporte and Levante.
The obvious issue is that the Granturismo is practically drawing its pension. The steer is that its replacement is likely to come first.
The smaller Alfieri would then be spun from the same architecture, but sold at a lower price point.
THE LEVANTE WILL GO ON SALE IN AUSTRALIA LATE THIS YEAR, BUT ONLY IN DIESEL FORM. PETROL VERSIONS MAY FOLLOW... OR NOT
