Why 718?

THE ORIGINAL Boxster was designed as a tribute to the 550, Porsche’s first mid-engined racer of the 1950s, and the latest version was named after the 550’s successor, the 718. It has some big shoes to fill. Race versions of the 718 were victorious in the Targa Florio and the 12 Hours of Sebring, and took a class win (and third outright) at Le Mans in 1958. An open-wheeled version called the 718/2 was successful in Formula 2 racing and was even employed as an F1 car when the category went 1.5-litre in 1961.
