To give the Handling Speciale its unique sound, Ferrari developed new rear boxes for the exhaust, incorporating separate chambers that work as what are called Helmholtz resonators. Basically this is the principle of making air resonate in a cavity to produce certain sound frequencies – the same idea as blowing across the top of a bottle. The HS has a switchable valve to direct exhaust flow into the box at mid and high revs, where it creates more noise despite the muffling effects of the turbochargers upstream.
