It’s not a tuner!
One way to get Ingo Reisch riled is to refer to Alpina as a tuner. It’s a registered manufacturer in its own right in Germany and enjoys a number of benefits from that status.
“It’s very important for us to stress that they’re not trying to compete against M. It’s a different product,” explains Reisch, choosing his words carefully.
What’s clear is that they have the ability to pick and choose the best bits from BMW’S range to create their vehicles: “They grab the larger brakes from the 5 Series and put it in a B3 body, taking stuff from the 7 Series into the Alpina B5. They haven’t updated the engines; they’ve stayed with the older-style engine because it’s better for torque.”
