Pro modular; no cons
BMW’S cautious electrification strategy is based around the development of a modular component set, with battery packs and motor units set to be used in multiple applications. Key to it is an impressively compact new ‘Heat’ unit which combines an electric motor, control electronics and a reduction gearbox into a single casing, providing power outputs from 100kw to more than 300kw. Pure EVS will have one or two of these, while hybrids will use one to power one axle while a conventional combustion engine turns the other.
