Sibling rivalry

What was once a dirt track at Pikes Peak is now the second highest paved road in the United States. It’s beaten by Mount Evans to its northwest, which has tarmac a mere 8m further up, but Pikes Peak is the motorsport icon. The Race to the Clouds began in 1916, with European teams (including Audi) joining in 1984. The 20km course to the top starts at Mile Marker 7, with 156 bends and little to no Armco. VW reset the record earlier this year, its electric I.D. R racer the first vehicle to summit in less than 8min. Tourists can drive up yearround, weather permitting, for $10$15pp depending on the season.
