The Thomson Dam was designed on the notion it would droughtproof Melbourne. Located near Baw Baw National Park in West Gippsland, 130km east of Melbourne, it was built by more than a thousand construction workers, who were housed with their families in the purpose-built nearby town of Rawson. Opened in July 1984, Thomson Dam holds 1068 billion litres – twice Sydney harbour, or 628 MCGS full – and makes up 60 percent of Melbourne’s total water storage.
