Give us a wave
True autonomy is going to radically change the way that cars look as well as the way they drive, with LIDAR sensors necessary to give the additional range necessary for higher-speed safety; they can see up to a kilometre out whereas radar is limited to less than 200 metres. Many manufacturers will doubtless try to integrate these into existing structures, but others are set to take a more radical view, with Chinese startup Byton – which says it will be making cars in 2019 – set to use pop-up LIDARS that deploy when the car is travelling autonomously.
