AUDI A4 WHAT’S NEW?

Headline act is the move to diesel power for the sporting S4 variant. Gone is the turbopetrol V6; in its place is a 255kw 3.0-litre V6 TDI turbo teamed with an electric compressor powered by the 48-volt electrical system.

HAS IT WORKED?

In terms of torque, yes. The new engine packs 700Nm, up 200Nm over the petrol V6. But aren’t diesels on the nose? Seems not.

SKODA SUPERB WHAT’S NEW?

There are enough exterior changes to alter the overall dimensions, and slimmer LED matrix headlights will be available, as will Audi-style ‘dynamic’ indicators. A plug-in hybrid will also be offered for the first time.

HAS IT WORKED?

It sure looks crisp and upmarket, and may help contribute to the untangling of the slightly confused Skoda brand values in Australia.

HYUNDAI IONIQ WHAT’S NEW?

There’s a textured panel where the grille should be, but real news is the bigger battery and stronger motor. The cell pack is now 38kwh (was 28kwh) while the motor is up 12kw, now good for 100kw/295nm. Upgraded multimedia and climate control, too.

HAS IT WORKED?

We’d say yes, given the range is now 293km (WLTP.) The recharging system has also been upgraded, meaning less time plugged in. Win.
