The Mercedes W 125 streamliner at Silverstone demolished a series of speed records on the AVUS Ring near Berlin, now known as the Bundesautobahn 115. The ‘Automobil Verkehrs Und Übungsstraße (Automobile Traffic and Training Road) opened in 1921. Until ’98, it was also used as a racing circuit and it was here that Rudolf Caracciola and the 541kw Mercedes streamliner demolished flying mile and kilometre records in 1938. The death of Auto Union star Bernd Rosemeyer in that same year brought the curtain down on AVUS’ suitability as a record-breaking venue.
