Hottest ’Vettes for Oz? MAYBE DON’T RUSH TO THE BANK JUST YET

-

New operation GM Special Vehicles (GMSV) Australia plans to offer the 369kW V8 ‘base’ C8 Corvette for approximately $150,000 late this year – built in factory right-hand drive at GM’s Bowling Green plant in Kentucky. But what are the chances of the even-hotter versions we’ve reported on here, officially hitting Aussie roads? Well, not zero, but they are slim. These models are likely to be in hot demand in the USA, meaning potentially there’s no need for GM to bother going to the extra effort – and cost – to produce and validate them in right-hand drive for low volume markets like Australia, the UK and Japan. And even if GM did, cars like the ZL1 Zora would still have to survive another business case to be offered locally. But that all said, GM surprised all by developing the C8 Corvette in right-hand drive in the first place, going against what seemed like business common sense. “That would have cost tens of millions of dollars for just a relative handful of cars,” one source said to Wheels. “Someone over there must really like Australia.” Fingers crossed they like us a lot.
