OUT OF THE BOX FESTIVAL

Where Brisbane - - What’s On Brisbane -

Playing with air, creating self-portraits and showcasing children’s connections to culture are just some of the events lined up for this year’s Out of the Box Festival, QPAC’S biennial festival for children 8 years and under. This year for the first time festivalgoers can access every Out of the Box in-theatre experience, activity, exhibition and workshop with an all-inclusive Day Pass. In-theatre experiences are held every day of the festival and include:

Air Play

New York’s “Air Play” merges circus and street theatre performance art with sculptural artistry. “Air Play” is a circus-style adventure of two siblings journeying through a surreal world, transforming ordinary objects into uncommon beauty. Fabrics dance in the wind, balloons have a mind of their own, confetti turns into the night sky, and an enormous canopy of hovering silk forever alters their future.

The Arrival

A beautiful production recreated with New Zealand’s Red Leap Theatre Company, adapted from the award-winning novel by Shaun Tan, “The Arrival” follows the story of a man starting a new life amidst the extraordinary inhabitants of his new land. A man flees his homeland and journeys across vast seas to arrive in a strange, wondrous new world where giant ships fly through the air and curious creatures abound. There he negotiates dazzling architecture, bizarre foods and foreign tongues to build a new life. On his travels, the man meets fellow sympathetic strangers, each with their own tales to tell.

Duck

“Duck”, a new theatre work, is based on the book by Janet A. Holmes and illustrator Jonathan Bentley. “Duck” is a simple yet heartfelt story of friendship and love showing us that we need others as much as they need us. Through movement and live music, follow the story of a boy and his best friend as they spend every waking hour together—soaring through the air, building skyscrapers up up up— before Duck mysteriously goes missing. When the boy ventures to search for him without any luck, we’re left wondering, will Duck ever be found again?

Slapdash Galaxy

This is the tale of Sam and Junior—two brothers, who must flee their barren planet, and embark on an epic quest across the galaxy. Using the contents of your cleaning cupboard, Bunk Puppets’ David Geddes conjures up astonishing lo-fi theatrical wizardry using only old boxes, bubble wrap, drinking straws, tennis balls, ping pong bats and old toys. It’s a crazy shadow puppet universe, made from bits of rubbish.
