BEAUTIFUL: THE CAROLE KING MUSICAL
This month The Australian Ballet is performing Christopher Wheeldon’s “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland©”. The ballet was created by Wheeldon for The Royal Ballet in 2011 and has since enthralled audiences the world over. Arguably the world’s highest profile contemporary choreographer, Wheeldon reimagines the beloved storybook classic using ballet’s traditional structures, interspersed with dramatic twists and comedic turns for a modern edge. Watch as Alice tumbles down the rabbit hole and goes on some whimsical adventures with the White Rabbit and the Knave of Hearts, while coming up against the Queen of Hearts.
5–22 December, Capitol Theatre, 13 Campbell Street, Haymarket. 1300 369 741. australianballet.com.au Long before she was Carole King, the chart-topping music legend, she was an ordinary girl with extraordinary talent. She sold her first hit, “Will You Love Me Tomorrow”, at just 17. By the time she was 20 she was writing number ones for the biggest acts in rock ‘n’ roll, including The Drifters, The Shirelles and Aretha Franklin. But it wasn’t until her personal life began to crack that she finally managed to find her own voice and step into the spotlight, with music that would become the soundtrack of a generation. Starring multi awardwinning Esther Hannaford as Carole King, Josh Piterman as Gerry Goffin and Amy Lehpamer as Cynthia Weil, this uplifting and inspirational Broadway hit will have you on your feet in applause.
