Near perfect conditions for friendly sailing competition

Whitsunday Times - - SPORT / ON THE WATER -

SAILING: Last Wednesday saw pleasant conditions with a gusty 15 knot wind from the south east.

With a few clouds hanging around, the fleet of 14 boats prepared for the battle ahead, while the race committee set a triangular course of varying lengths.

The two boats in the multihull division had different characteristics, with Overdrive (Rupert King) being the bigger, heavier boat suitable for champagne cruising, while G’nome (Terry Archer), a lightweight flier with zero comforts for the crew.

Overdrive travelled best initially, to take out the Doyle Sails trophy for the best start.

It didn’t take long for G’nome to take the lead and stretch their advantage.

At the finish, there was five minutes separating the two boats, with G’nome making ground on each leg of the course.

After corrected times that lead was whittled down to two minutes.

In division two, the usual battle at the front raged between Treasure VIII (Rob Davis) and QMS (John Galloway).

QMS took honours at the start, but was unable to maintain the lead.

Delher Magic (Charlie Preen) battled against arch rival Twister (Kevin Fogarty), with Twister taking claiming victory by 35 seconds.

After handicaps were applied, Treasure VIII took outright honours from QMS, holding off Twister by just two seconds.

Fourth and fifth place were split by two seconds, with Syzygy (Errol Goodwin) getting the nod.

Division three saw some excellent racing between Lady Katherine (Gary Hughes) and High Tide (Shannan Hart), with first blood to High Tide as they took the best start award.

Further back, Kameruka (Bob Beale) had a lonely race, not quite quick enough to engage the first two boats, but ahead of Masquerade (Tom Vujasinovic) and Infarrction (Carol Roberts).

On corrected time, Lady Katherine had the last laugh, taking the overall honours by 30 seconds from High Tide and Anthea (Dewi Hughes).

LINE HONOURS: Division three winner Lady Katherine on the water earlier this year.

G’NOME PROJECT: Need for speed.
