Visitors welcomed at Airlie Beach bridge
BRIDGE: During the past couple of weeks Airlie Beach Bridge Club has welcomed visitors from Proserpine, Bowen and Port Macquarie.
All have commented favourably on the players’ new venue at the “Marine Clubhouse” at the VMR building.
Eric Bottle gave thanks to Prosperine duo Dot and Bev for three full tables on the morning of June 15.
First place was a tie between Linda Priday with Annie Vaughan and Dot Aspinall with Bev Gage all with 61 per cent.
Dale Hell and Eric Bottle scraped into third with 51 per cent.
Di Dobbins was welcomed to the club on June 19 as she’s been a long-time bridge acquaintance of the club after being “inactive” for a couple of years.
A chilly night at the VMR didn’t deter Linda and Gillian who breezed home with 59 per cent, Annie and Neil not that far behind in second with 56 per cent, Corrie and Helen third with 52 per cent.
On June 22; Bowen pair Ellie and Betty visited again and showed their experience winning with 66 per cent, second were Neil Cawthorne and Annie Vaughan with 55 per cent, Eric Bottle and Joy Ellis making it into third place with 48 per cent.
Last Tuesday, Port Macquarie visitors Noeline and Terry McKenna played a fast game with Eric and Renate.
The win went to Renate and Eric with 63 per cent, closely followed by Linda, Gillian, Noeline and Terry equal second with 59 per cent with Neil and Annie in third.
There was only one “flat” hand = one NT makes seven at all three tables.
Spades was the flavour of the night with three boards played, only one in NT, H and D which leaves 19 played in assorted suits.
Highest score of the night went to Renate and Eric with 690 for three NT +3, there were a couple of other +3’s, even a +4 but not bid to game.
The lowest score also went to Renate and Eric with – 400 for two NT making eight because Eric had a “rush of blood” and responded two NT to Renate’s opening.
Friday morning showed Noeline and Terry adapted to Airlie Beach well winning with 63 per cent just edging out Annie and Neil, followed by Linda and Gillian.
Not one “flat” hand from this Tuesday’s play despite five boards being played in S at all three tables, three in NT three in Hand one in D.
Highest score for the day went to Noeline and Terry for 4SX making 12 = score 1190, on Board 16.
Both other tables also bid 4S making 12 Noeline and Terry also bid and made 6S (980), and 4H Making 13 (510).
As did Dewi and Trevor; Renate and Sigi bid and made 6NT (990) and 4NT making 12 (490).
