A never-ending summer for Ella
NAME: Ella Blumenröhr AGE: 18
HOME: South of Germany
THIS worldly 18-year-old decided she would be better off having a gap year, rather than launching straight into further study, because like many young adults who finished school she had “no idea” what she wants to do.
Ella is travelling with her best friend from school, Kim. The pair decided they’d be the perfect travel companions because they “never fight”.
This is Kim’s first trip without her parents, so perhaps it’s lucky she’s with Ella, who has travelled extensively throughout Europe, Asia, the US and now she’s upside down in the southern hemisphere.
Ella decided on Australia because it’s a popular backpacker destination and she thought she’d be safest. She also liked the idea of spending New Year’s Eve in Sydney.
She has no solid plans, and will flit off home to Germany when her money runs out – judging by the Woollies Vegemite scroll she was munching on, she’s determined to get the most bang for her buck and be here as long as possible.
What’s your favourite Australian destination so far?
I really loved the Great Barrier Reef, it was amazing. We saw a big fish called George. I am looking forward to Byron Bay, everyone says it’s amazing.
What’s the weirdest thing about Australian culture?
I’ve only been here for a week, so nothing has stood out to me yet... maybe being in the local paper is a bit weird.
What’s your favourite thing about Australia?
I love the warm weather – I flew into Melbourne but it was too cold, so I flew up north. It’s good how you can choose, I guess.
How do you think travel has changed you?
I think it makes you more open to the world and other people. If you only stay in your country for your whole life, your views on the world are going to be a lot different to the views you have if you’re bold enough to put yourself out there.
What’s your top Australian travel tip?
I would say don’t plan too much and just see how things go, and go with the flow.
TROPICAL PARADISE: Ella loves the steamy, tropical weather and doesn’t fancy going too far south.
