Indie surfer Clancy is a rare Breed

Whitsunday Times - - NEWS - Backpacker chats

NAME: Clancy Breed AGE: 23 HOME: Byron Bay

CLANCY Breed looks like your typical Byron Bay surfer – and that’s because he is one.

Although he’s not a tourist from a distant land, he’s a tourist nonetheless, cruising up the East Coast to Cairns with his best friend, Jengo.

Clancy and Jengo have been best mates for 13 years and Clancy said there was no other person he’d rather travel north with to “see a croc and swim with the irukandji”.

The boys bought an old van, which they aptly named “Vanos”, and will be driving to Townsville towards the wetter weather.

Clancy said he was disappointed about the weather, as his boat trip got cancelled, but he preferred to look on the bright side; he’d had a tour on land consisting of watering holes of a different kind.

What's your favourite destination so far?

To be honest, Sushi Hi in Airlie Beach has been my favourite – I like this sushi joint more than Noosa, and Finch Hatton Gorge – we were lucky enough to get there, the day before the fires hit.

But yeah, Sushi Hi in Airlie Beach, top stuff!

What's the weirdest thing about Australian culture?

I think it’s weird how diverse we all are, and how stereotypes exist, but sometimes they’re surprisingly accurate. You’ve probably pigeon-holed me as an indie surfer dude, and that’s because I am one.

What's your favourite thing about Australia?

There really is something for everyone and I can just jump in Vanos and drive up to Cairns and that’s a story-worthy trip.

How do you think travel has changed you?

Maybe I’m a better driver now, seeing as I’ve done most of it; Jengo likes to have a snooze. But life experience helps you evolve and this trip is life experience so I’m evolving right now.

What's your top Australian travel tip?

It’s a good idea to stick to a budget when you’re travelling, so I recommend drinking goon because that’s cheap. Then you can splash out on tours and sights.

CHILLED: Clancy Breed decided to go for a dip, regardless of the wild weather.
