Confessions of a JONATHAN COLOMBINI CELEBRITY HAIRSTYLIST
Celebrity hairstylist Jonathan Colombini shares insider gossip and tricks of the trade
What’s it like working with celebrity clients?
What a lot of people don’t understand is that you’re going into their homes so it’s important to build a bond with them. They’re not on the red carpet, they’re home with no makeup on and their guard is down, so once the trust factor is there, it’s very different.
You work a lot with the Kardashian and Jenner girls. Do you have a favourite?
Oh, gosh! [ Laughs] I don’t know … I work with Kendall most of the time, but they all have such different personalities and they all bring something different to the table. Kylie and Khloé are the jokesters. They’re always laughing.
So they’re fun to work with?
Yeah, yeah, but also Kendall’s a lot of fun, too, more in the fact that she likes to push the envelope with her style, so that makes it fun for me. Who are your other favourite clients? I’ve been working with Laura Prepon [ That ’70s Show] for over seven years now; she’s a really close friend. I’ve also worked a lot with Demi [Moore]. I love her, she’s so sweet.
Any red-carpet disasters?
Oh yeah. Fashion Week in New York for the Yeezy Season 3 show. The whole Kardashian/jenner family were going to the show and wearing Yeezy. I did Kendall’s hair down, and when we jumped in the lift to leave Kim called her and said this is what you’re wearing. It was a cream turtleneck dress. I was like, “Oh shit! You can’t wear your hair down with a turtleneck!” I literally threw her hair into a topknot in the lift. It was a little change that avoided disaster. It ended up being the topknot talk of the season!
“I have become like family with most of my clients”
