Salt-n-pepa SPOT THE fake
Talk about the ultimate selfie! These supermodels strike a pose with their wax doubles
The Grammy-winning hip-hop trio of Cheryl James (Salt), Sandra Denton (Pepa) and Deidra Roper (DJ Spinderella) will join Vanilla Ice, Color Me Badd, Coolio, Tone Loc and Young MC on the Australian leg of the “I Love the ’90s” tour (starting in Adelaide on June 6). WHO’S Cynthia Wang got the word from James, 51, on the music that took them from New York to the world.
The song that reminds me of childhood
I don’t think there’s just one song that reminds me of my childhood, but I can remember my family listening to Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, the Supremes, the Temptations, stuff like that. I still
listen to a lot of that music today.
The quintessential 1990s song
“Shoop” is what I think of as the most ’90s song of ours, so that sticks out to me in general. Fans go nuts for that song, and it’s one of our biggest hits. I never thought that 31 years later we would be touring and celebrating the ’90s the way that we are. And every time I hear “Shoop” I’m just reminded of that and the effect that song had on people.
Artist I’m obsessed with
I really like Kendrick Lamar right now. His songs all have a message, you know. They deal with racism and current issues going on right now in people’s lives.
My midnight karaoke jam
Easy. Anything Michael Jackson! Everyone knows his songs, so it always goes off.
Song that makes me most proud
“Push It”. Ironically it was the B-side of “Tramp”, but DJS started to play it and it took off. It really wasn’t my or Pep’s favourite song when we first recorded it, but now it’s the biggest Salt-n-pepa song ever! When you ask people what they know about Salt-n-pepa, they always think of “Push It”. And this song really connected to women on another level—we have fans come up to us and tell us how this song affected their lives and we helped them get through college, or leave an abusive relationship so, you know, it’s really special to us.
