SURPRISE WEDDING Miranda Kerr and Evan Spiegel say ‘I do.’
Less than a year after their engagement, the glamour pair say ‘I do’ in a super-private ceremony in their Los Angeles backyard
Even though he was on home turf, Evan Spiegel was upstaged at his own wedding to Miranda Kerr on May 27. And it was nowhere near a fair fight. Kerr’s son, Flynn Bloom, 6, stole the spotlight, running around the ceremony and reception at the family’s Los Angeles home and having a great time with a group of flower girls. Dressed in a three-piece suit, the little boy “looked very excited,” a source told E! News, adding that he “was twirling and spinning as he ran down the driveway.”
His mother and new stepfather were just as emotional on the day, sources said, with reports that both Kerr, 34, and billionaire Spiegel, 26, teared up during the 20-minute 4 PM service. The bride—a witness said she looked “regal and like a natural princess”— was “ecstatic to marry Evan,” a source tells WHO, while another insider told E! News guests cheered at the end of the ceremony: “The vows were beautiful.”
With a guest list of around 50, the wedding capped off a week of activity at the Spiegels’ $12 million Brentwood mansion. “For a small wedding, it has been a huge production,” a source tells WHO, calling the day “intimate and classy.”
Preparations included the construction of a backyard marquee, reportedly decorated in a rustic-chic style, with farmhouse tables, white benches and chairs, cream lounge furniture, pots of ferns and ivy, and masses of white and pale-pink garden roses. “Miranda has been very involved,” says the source. “She has great taste and knew exactly what she wanted.”
In February, second-time bride Kerr opened up about the deeper significance of the superprivate day in an interview with UK newspaper The Times, saying she would not have another child until she married Spiegel, and appearing to suggest abstinence was the best form of contraception. “Not yet. Not until after we get married. My partner is very traditional,” she said. “We can’t ... I mean, we’re just ... waiting.”
She had another treat up her sleeve for her new husband on the night. As things wound down after hours of fun, the DJ announced, “Let’s hear it for the bride!” reported E! News, and Kerr got up onstage and sang Shania Twain’s “Still the One”. “She sounded amazing and hit all the high notes,” said a source. “At the end, everyone clapped and whistled for her.”
The party kicked off with the arrival of guests—men in suits and women wearing colourful floor-grazing gowns—in a chauffeurdriven stream of black limousines and vans with tinted windows. They were picked up at various checkpoints before being driven to the house, according to TMZ. Secrecy was important, a source told the New York Post: “Both Miranda and Evan wanted the ceremony to be very private.”
Some of Kerr’s family, including her parents, John and Therese, and brother Matthew and his husband, James Wright, flew in from Australia. “Evan and Miranda looked at many different options for where they wanted to have their wedding but their backyard was what felt most
intimate and perfect,” said a source. “They kept it small with only those people that mean the most to them.”
Before the ceremony, cocktails were served inside the marquee, while a string orchestra performed and a pianist played songs including “When You Wish Upon A Star”. Later, dinner was also served in the tent and E! News reported that the newly minted Mr and Mrs Spiegel worked the room with their dog, Teddy, thanking everyone for coming. Kerr, the source tells WHO, was “very sweet.”
As guests were seated for dinner, singer Jason Mraz performed a set that included his hit “I’m Yours”, then speeches were held after the meal. The E! News source said “many people talked about Flynn,” adding that one of Spiegel’s friends said, “Congratulations, you three,” at the end of his speech, referring to the boy. Kerr’s mother, grandmother and aunt reportedly took to the microphone, with her aunt giving the groom advice on how to keep his wife happy: “Remember the woman is always right.”
After the cake was cut, Colbie Caillat performed for about 30 minutes in a set including “Falling For You” and “I Do”. She reportedly thanked Kerr and Spiegel, saying she was “honoured to be there,” then was joined onstage by Mraz for their duet “Lucky”. DJ Ruckus cranked out a playlist including Stevie Wonder’s “Isn’t She Lovely”, Justin Timberlake’s “Can’t Stop the Feeling!” and Madonna’s “Holiday”. Said a source, “Everyone hit the dance floor and didn’t stop dancing all night.”
One absentee from proceedings was Flynn’s dad, actor Orlando Bloom, who was married to Kerr for three years from 2010. Despite his close relationship with his ex (they are on “great terms,” said a source) he told UK radio show Radio X, “I haven’t received an invite.” Would he have gone if he had? “I would,” he said. “We get on. It’s all harmonious. I’m blessed.”
Former Victoria’s Secret model Kerr and the Snapchat CEO met at a Louis Vuitton dinner in 2014, and were seen shopping for flowers and groceries in Los Angeles in June 2015. Spiegel proposed last July and announced their engagement on Snapchat using a custom-made filter. Kerr debuted her ring, a round-cut centre diamond set between two tapered baguettes, on Snapchat in a post decorated with Bitmoji caricatures of the couple.
What’s next for the couple after their honeymoon? She is busy with her cosmetics company, Kora Organics, but home life could be a priority. Despite having made his fortune thanks to social media, Spiegel is “a private guy,” Kerr said in February, adding, “He’s very mysterious. He’s very in-the-moment. I couldn’t be more proud of Evan and what he’s achieved.”
