SIN & SCANDAL: A TIMELINE

-

JUNE 1996 Shorewood Elementary School Year 6 teacher Mary Kay Letourneau begins a sexual relationship with student Vili Fualaau. The pair have sex at her house and in her car.

FEBRUARY 1997 Letourneau’s husband, Steve, finds love letters from his wife to Fualaau. A relative notifies the school, starting an investigation. Letourneau, who is pregnant with Fualaau’s child, is charged with child rape.

1998 Letourneau is released after serving six months in prison, but violates parole by having sex with Fualaau after her release. She is sentenced to seven additional years. She becomes pregnant with the 15-year-old’s second child.

1999 Steve Letourneau files for divorce after 15 years of marriage and wins sole custody of the couple’s four children. Mary Kay’s two girls with Fualaau are cared for by his mother, Soona.

2004 Letourneau is legally barred from contacting the now 21-year-old Fualaau. He successfully petitions the court to reverse the no-contact order after her release and the couple date.

2005 Letourneau and Fualaau marry in front of 200 guests at a Washington winery. Their daughters are flower girls. “There wasn’t a dry eye in the house,” guest Wendy Cracchiolo told WHO at the time.

2006 Fualaau and Letourneau talk to WHO about their life together, full of movie nights and casual dinners. “We do normal things,” said Letourneau, who had visitation with her four children from her first marriage.

2015 In a TV interview with 20/20, Fualaau says that his decadelong marriage isn’t perfect. “I don’t think there’s ever a full 10 good years of marriage,” he tells Barbara Walters. “You have your ups and downs.”

2017 Fualaau files for legal separation. “It’s usually a precursor to filing for divorce,” says Letourneau’s friend and lawyer David Gehrke. On May 31, Letourneau files a petition to have the case dismissed.
